Penguin education workshop inspires teachers

Greymouth penguin education workshop 9 Dec 2015 - Zoe Watson presentsEleven teachers from Greymouth attended an inspiring workshop led by environmental educator Zoe Watson, giving them food for thought as they planned their 2016 programmes.

To help teachers get the most out of the West Coast Penguin Trust’s education resource, two workshops have now been presented on the coast, the second one in Greymouth at the end of last term, kindly hosted by Grey Main School.

The teachers become the students to experience the activities designed by Zoe, who developed the resource, drawing maps of a local penguin habitat areas, allocating descriptive words to the maps and considering human impacts on penguins. Supported by Trust Ranger, Reuben Lane, the teachers were treated to up to date local knowledge of West Coast penguins, helping to cement the understanding of the education material.Greymouth penguin education workshop 9 Dec 2015 drawing penguin habitat maps

As teachers and youth leaders use the resource, examples and photos of the activities will be shared on the Trust’s website and we look forward to receiving examples of children’s work.

The education resource is available to download here or contact the Trust for a hard copy on [email protected].
